SB348 Becomes Act 475
The Commission’s legislative effort this session ended in success for Arkansas's two legal aid organizations and the low-income Arkansans they serve. The 87th General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of SB348, which was signed into law as Act 475 on March 13, 2009.
With its passage, SB348 will help fund the work of providing more low-income Arkansans with the legal help that they couldn’t otherwise afford. It does this by raising the uniform circuit court filing fee by $10.

Commissioners Attend Two Conferences in Orlando
In May, several members and staff of the Arkansas Access to Justice Commission attended the 2009 ABA/NLADA Equal Justice Conference and the 2009 National Meeting of State Access to Justice Chairs. Both conferences were held in Orlando at the Doubletree Universal Convention Center. Between sessions, attendees from almost every state and Canada mingled, sharing tips and email addresses.

Legal Aid of Arkansas Moves to New Location
Legal Aid of Arkansas, Inc. relocated its Fayetteville office on June 1. The new address is:
1905 E. Mission Blvd., Ste. 6, Fayetteville, AR 72703
Its local phone numbers and fax numbers remain the same, but the new toll free number is (800) 967-9224. Those seeking services will still call the HelpLine at (800) 952-9243.

Meet Commissioner George Shelton
George Shelton is Senior Director for Campaign Management at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. George oversees projects related to reputation and issues management, grassroots advocacy and message development.
Before joining Wal-Mart, George was a partner at the Strother-Duffy-Shelton public affairs and advertising group in Washington, D.C. In this position, George developed communications campaigns advocating candidates and causes that would bring opportunity to underserved communities. George began his career working for Larry King at CNN. He was a political appointee to the White House during the Clinton Administration.
He is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, with a Bachelor of Arts in Television and Film. George, his wife Gina, their daughter Katie, and son Carrick, reside in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
