Meet Commissioner Angela Duran

Angela Duran is President of Southern Good Faith Fund, a nonprofit organization in Pine Bluff, Ark., that helps low-income families buy houses, start businesses, and go to college. She oversees five programs and manages a staff of 22 with a budget of $2.3 million.

Back to School and Beyond the Courtroom

The kids in Hughes, Ark., may not have looked forward to going back to school this year, but at least they have the right supplies.

On August 6, residents of Hughes were given over $600 worth of school supplies by Legal Aid of Arkansas, a non-profit law firm that provides legal services to people with low incomes....

Justice for the Homeless

Homeless people often have trouble finding employment because of legal problems, but on Saturday, Sept. 13, many found legal help at the Homeless Outreach Event in Little Rock.

Judge Wayne Gruber, of the Pulaski County District Court, presided over a “Homeless Court” at the event, and he heard 41 misdemeanor cases. He granted leniency or gave leniency request letters to many of the defendants....

  • The new chair of the ABA’s Litigation Section will make Civil Gideon his main project. Civil Gideon is the practice of providing publicly funded lawyers to those who can't afford them in civil proceedings where people's basic needs are at stake. (9/11/08)
  • An article about cyber-piracy in the September edition of ABAJournal features the Arkansas Legal Services Partnership and Arkansas’ own Vince Morris. (9/2/08)
  • The New Mexico Supreme Court adopts new legal services limited practice rule allowing attorneys from out of state to work in legal aid programs for two three-year terms without taking the state bar exam. It also allows emeritus attorneys to represent legal aid clients without being active members of the bar. (8/29/08)
